Air Preheater(APH)

Thermodyne Engineering Systems manufactures Air Preheaters and are given as a standard side accessory along with the main equipment – Boiler, in a Packaged Type Boiler, Combi Boilers.

Designed to optimize efficiency by increasing the heating surface area without increasing the required space, and are available in 1 and 2 pass configurations for both flue gases and air to extract the most heat from the flue gases.

Air Preheater - APH

Air Preheaters (APH) are Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers that are used to pre-heat air before it is supplied to the boiler or furnaces/kilns for fuel combustion. The main goal of the Air Pre heater is to recover waste heat from flue gases exiting the boiler.

Type of Air Preheater

  1. Shell and Tube type single pass air preheaters

  2. Shell and Tube type dual pass air preheaters

  3. Finned Tube air preheaters

Working of Air Preheater

Air Preheaters have a shell and tube type construction where exhaust heat from the flue gases is transferred to the air when they come in indirect contact with each other.

The shell of an air preheater is made up of tubes arranged in a square or triangular pitch and welded to a tube plate. Flue gases and air may be permitted to flow either shell side or tube side alternately depending on the kind of operation and simplicity of cleaning.

Air Preheater (Pros)

  1. Design with two passes to recover the most waste heat from flue gases exiting the boiler.

  2. It is used to recover waste heat from flue gases leaving the boiler exhaust, resulting in a 2-3 percent increase in boiler efficiency.

  3. It is used to warm the fuel, increasing the boiler's efficiency even further.

  4. Payback time is less.

Air Preheater (Cons)

  1. As the size of the Induced Draft Fan grows as more equipment or accessories are placed in the route of flue gases, the pressure drop down the line rises.
